It was far from a normal Monday night when my mobile phone started to beep with notification after notification after notification. You see, I was head down setting up our new beach huts on the websites. All four were launching over the same weekend pre-Easter school holidays and I admit it. I was drinking a can of Monster.
I’m a little ashamed to say I was drinking a high energy drink at 8 pm on a Monday night but well decorating and setting up four new beach hut hires was taking a toll on energy levels. Had I stupidly posted the new beach hut link by accident too early?? No, tell me I hadn’t!! Argh.
Glancing at my phone, I realised it was Twitter. No… could it be? After several weeks of entering Theo Paphitis Small Business Sunday (SBS) Award, had we won? Eeeeeeek.
Small Business Sunday Winner (SBS)
I know who’d have thought that in our busiest week ever, we’d get a business boost from Retail Entrepreneur Theo Paphitis! On Monday 27th March, he retweeted a tweet I’d sent to him the previous day to his 500,000 Twitter followers.
Two weeks on, I’m still a little in shock to have been named as one of his six weekly winners. I’d sent him a tweet of Skye who was just about ready for new guests, giving him a little peek into our world. The irony is now that he’d retweeted a ‘not quite’ complete beach hut to everyone ;0)
Since being announced a winner, our twitter following has shot up by 40% and despite it being a little overwhelming at times with over a hundred tweets per day that week, the support has been fantastic.
A few days later we were asked to join James Max on Talk Radio programme to talk beach huts and we’ve even received bookings from other SBS winners who are in the area by being profiled on the #SBS website (www.theopaphitissbs.com).
I also now have access to an exclusive members’ selling platform www.shopsbs.co.uk where hundreds of winners are already selling thousands of products, from unique gifts and bespoke furniture to pet toys or jewellery. You’ll spot our gift vouchers on there very very soon!
But I’m really looking forward to the annual winner’s event. With the 2016 event having just taken place in February, I’ll have a little while to think about what to wear!
What is Small Business Sunday?
The weekly initiative, set up by Theo in 2010, now has 1700 #SBS winners and supports small businesses in the UK.
Small business champion and Ryman Stationery, Robert Dyas and Boux Avenue Chairman, Theo Paphitis, messaged to say:
“We are thrilled to welcome new #SBS members every week and highlight just how important it is to support our small businesses here in the UK. My vision is that everyone who has ever won an #SBS re-tweet from me becomes part of a friendly club; like-minded individuals who can share successes and learnings. The website and Shop #SBS will also give a valuable profile to the winners chosen and I wish Millie’s Beach Huts every success.”
While it was tough going at the time with launching the new beach huts and keeping on top of the wonderful messages, how lovely it is to look back now. I’m so so grateful for that boost from Theo and know that we’re a stronger business with his support too.
