How has the year started for you? I hope January was kind to all of you. I’ve certainly enjoyed the much wilder weather and dog walks that haven’t been too harsh with rain! But still, I’m as always surprised how quickly it has gone and it’s that time again – my monthly instalment of things to do in Essex.
While February is known as the month of luurrrvvvee, it’s still packed full of things to do for all the family. Helpful when we also have the half term week during February too.

Harry Potter Book Night – Colchester Library
Wizard crafts, a magical fancy dress competition and a Harry Potter Treasure Hunt. Who wouldn’t love it?

Monthly Walk (Winter Birds) – River Lee Country Park
Join the Rangers for a walk around Lee Valley as part of the monthly walk series. You’ll have experts on hand from East London Birders to look at the winter residents in the west of the Lee Valley Regional Park.

Snowdrop Sunday – Headingham Castle
With at least 13 varieties of snowdrops covering the Castle’s winter gardens, you can’t miss the chance to view! The cafe will be open throughout along with falconry and archery displays during the day.

Teddy Bears Picnic – Colchester Arts Centre
Suitable for ages 5-11, a fun afternoon introducing you to the world of music, with musical stories and short pieces that will get your teddy dancing.

Opening Weekend and 40th Birthday – Lee Valley Farms
The first open day of the season and a great chance to celebrate their 40th birthday. A great range of activities throughout the day including guinea pigs, donkeys and even a boogie barn.
Don’t miss out on a ride on Tex the Tractor.

Scarecrow Making – RHS Hyde Hall
With two options on the day (large or small), the whole family can enjoy making a scarecrow. Great fun.

Snowdrop Sunday – The Gibberd Garden
View the carpet of snowdrops within the wooded areas of the garden. Both the tearoom and garden will be open, making the most of the day.

Half Term Specials – Epping Ongar Railway
Buses and trains will be running throughout the weekend. A great chance to get outdoors and enjoy the railway during this month’s milder weather.

Share the Love Week – Colchester Zoo
Valentines week returns to Colchester Zoo. Meet all the animals and keepers and learn about love throughout half term.

Jam packed days filled with magic shows, flying displays and face painting. There will be lots of indoor activities just in case the weather turns!

Tree I-D Walk – Belfairs Woodland Centre
An outdoor event where you’ll take a walk through the woods and find out about the 30 species of trees in Belfairs woods.

Saturday 25 February – 3 sessions throughout the day
Animal Shield Workshops -Colchester Arts Centre
With three workshops throughout the day, The Fairyland Trust will help you identify the track marks of a Barn Owl, a hare and even a badger. You’ll also make your very own decorated shield that can be used to defend forces of darkness.
